1. If I want to research the names of friends and family, do I have to purchase the list?
No. You can search the database for individual names by contacting our web site at: https://etax.dor.ga.gov/ptd/ucp/index.aspx

We hope this information is beneficial to you. If you have additional questions, please contact our section at (855) 329-9863.

2. Should I send money to this company to assist me in locating unclaimed property?
There are several companies mailing postcards to Georgia citizens requesting a fee ranging from $9.95 to $19.95 to assist you in finding unclaimed accounts. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THE MONEY! For this fee you will receive a photocopy of the addresses and phone numbers for the unclaimed property offices throughout the U.S. This information can be obtained at no charge by visiting the web site of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators at www.unclaimed.org. This site also provides links to other states so you can personally search for your name AT NO CHARGE!

3. Can I get a copy of Georgia's Unclaimed Property List?

Georgia's list of unclaimed property owners is updated annually in July. The list contains all types of accounts over $50.00. Any account that has been paid to the owner or has a pending claim is not on the list. Information currently provided on the list includes the internal tracking number of the account, the owner's name and last known city of residence for the owner. To protect the owner's privacy, the street address and the dollar value of each account is not provided.

The list is available on diskette ONLY and can be purchased for $50.00 from the Georgia Department of Revenue, Unclaimed Property Section. When placing your order, please send a cashier's check or money order payable to GEORGIA UNCLAIMED PROPERTY SECTION to:

The information on this listing is the same information included on our searchable database. If you want to check name for friends and family, it may be more beneficial for you to visit our web site at https://etax.dor.ga.gov/ptd/ucp/index.aspx.

4. Should I do business with an asset recovery service in order to claim my property?

Georgia citizens are often contacted by asset recovery services. These services work not only the lists of unclaimed accounts from the states, but also assist companies in locating owners prior to their sending accounts to the states as unclaimed property.

Owners contacted by these services have stocks, bonds and mutual funds that are unclaimed but are still in the possession of the company. You should review any and all records for any stocks, bonds or mutual funds that may have been issued in your name. Be sure to review those mutual funds that may have been included in 401K plans. Compile a list and contact those companies regarding the status of your account.

It is not necessary for you to contract with this company to receive your property because these accounts will eventually be delivered to the State for custodial holding. We return the property to the owner at no charge.

5. How do I find out about unclaimed U.S. Savings Bonds?

Information regarding the disposition of U. S. Savings Bonds can be obtained by writing the Bureau of Public Debt in Fairfax, VA. You will need to include the owner’s name and social security number in your request.

6. How does property become "unclaimed?"

This is a brief overview of how an account becomes unclaimed.

The Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act was adopted by Georgia's legislature in 1973. The Act protects the rights of owners of unclaimed accounts and relieves banks and companies of the continuing responsibility to maintain such accounts.

Under the Act, when a bank or company holds property belonging to someone else, but has lost contact with that person for a certain period of time, the bank or company must send the property to the state. The state serves as custodian to the property and makes several attempts to reunite the owners with their property.

Banks are allowed to take a $60.00 service charge on unclaimed accounts. If the account balance was less than $60.00, it may have been "absorbed" by the service charge.

7. Can I find out about my unclaimed income tax refund with the Unclaimed Property Section?

State and federal income tax refund checks are not delivered to the Georgia Unclaimed Property Section.

To inquire about a Georgia tax refund check, please contact the Taxpayer Services Division.

8. Inquiries About Real Estate

The Unclaimed Property Section does not serve as custodian over real property. You can call the tax commissioner in the county where the parcel is located to obtain information about land ownership.

9. FHA/VA Loan Information
